Along the river in Ottawa’s far east end sits the highly desirable community of Orleans, Ontario. Just a short distance from the bustling downtown core, you’ll find many inviting neighbourhoods that were once a part of the municipalities of Gloucester and Cumberland.
With a large French presence, bilingualism is the norm—something Orleans is very proud of. Today, nearly 130,000 francophones and anglophones live and work side by side, enjoying an enviable quality of life.
With so much to love, homes in the area don’t stay on the market for long. Because navigating today’s market is tough, you need to work with an Ottawa realty firm that knows Orleans inside and out.

About Orleans
Shopping & Dining Out
Orleans residents don’t need to go far to find what they need. That’s because convenient shopping complexes are strategically placed around the community filled with Big Box stores, supermarkets and boutiques. The Fallingbrook Shopping Centre and Trinity Crossing Mall are favourites, and folks from all over the city flock to Place d’Orléans.
And Orleans has an endless list of cafes and restaurants, as well! Locals frequent family-owned eateries like OCCO Kitchen, gather at Fritomania for amazing poutine and celebrate at (aptly named) Delicious Steakhouse.
It’s obvious the local “Heart of Orléans” BIA is very active and goes the extra mile to promote economic development in the area.
Schools
Orleans is home to many outstanding secondary and elementary schools, most of which are a part of the four publicly-funded school boards serving Ottawa:
- Ottawa-Carleton District School Board
- Ottawa Catholic School Board
- Conseil des ecoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario
- Conseil Ecoles Catholiques Centre-Est
Parks & Amenities
There’s no shortage of nature and beauty in Orleans. The community backs up to the picturesque Greenbelt and Mer Blue Bog, plus it borders the Ottawa River to the north. Waterfront access means opportunities abound for boating, swimming and hiking along shoreline paths. It’s also easy to get to Petrie Island, where wildlife flourishes. During winter, locals visit the island to ice fish and cross-country ski.
In addition to the vast 34-hectare Cumberland Millennium Sports Complex, there are a plethora of other parks in Orleans to keep the kids busy. Plus, it’s home to many state-of-the-art recreation facilities, such as the Ray Friel Centre and Bob MacQuarrie Recreation Complex, where you can also find the Elizabeth Manley Figure Skating Arena. For fun classes and camps, visit the Shenkman Arts Centre; it offers events year-round in both French and English.
Public Transportation
Commuting downtown from Orleans is a relatively hassle-free experience, thanks to quick and easy access to the 417 and reliable service from OC Transpo. It takes about 15 minutes from the east side of Orléans without traffic and up to 30 minutes during rush hour.
(It’ll be even quicker in a few short years. Plans are in place to open four new light-rail transit stations in Orleans: Jeanne d’Arc, Convent Glen, Place d’Orléans and Trim.)
