About Barrhaven
Barrhaven sits about 20 miles southwest of downtown Ottawa, just beyond the protected Greenbelt surrounding the city.
Thanks to the green space, forests and farms that border much of the community, it’s an oasis from the hustle and bustle of city life and affectionately called “The Haven” by residents.
It took a while for Barrhaven to come into its own and become a highly sought-after community to live in. Originally established in the 1960s, it wasn’t until the 80s and 90s that an influx of businesses spurred the rapid growth that continues today.
Now, Barrhaven is thriving and boasts countless amenities and conveniences. Everything is close at hand, so you don’t have to go far to find award-winning schools, a top-notch sports complex, spectacular shopping or a peaceful park.
The community of Barrhaven is relatively new, having experienced tremendous growth over the last 30 years or so. In this short time, residents have built a very strong sense of community.
It’s impossible not to know your neighbours. When the weather cooperates, everyone is out and about, walking to parks and schools that are found around every bend. And many recreational activities are organized by community associations and enthusiastic locals. People from around the capital region come to the suburb for sporting events, the spectacular Barrhaven Canada Day Celebration, Oktoberfest, the popular Santa Claus Parade, and more.
Publications like The Barrhaven Independent, an award-winning local newspaper, and The Barrhaven Blog, an incredibly helpful online resource, keep everyone abreast of news and events around town.
If you choose to join the growing population (of now 100,000+ people), you’ll likely buy a home in a neighbourhood full of busy families. It is a great family neighbourhood, after all. However, plenty of young professionals and seniors also enthusiastically call Barrhaven home.
With an abundance of families flocking to Barrhaven, it’s no surprise that there are more than 20 highly rated primary schools and high schools in the area. Four school boards offer a variety of pubic and private choices, many with francophone and bilingual curriculum options:
Business thrives in Barrhaven thanks to organizations like the Barrhaven Business Improvement Area. There is no shortage of big box stores and famous chains, plus many much-loved local Barrhaven businesses.
If you are searching for something, an excellent place to start is at the intersection of Greenbank Road and Strandherd Drive, where three shopping centres converge. You’ll undoubtedly find whatever you need at the Barrhaven Towne Centre, Village Square or the Chapman Mills Marketplace.
Again, Barrhaven has it all! You don’t need to leave the community to find groceries, a veterinarian, movie theatres, fitness centres, medical care, clothing stores, or fantastic food! Be sure to stop by The Baker for mouthwatering Mediterranean pies or Juluca’s for pizza, pasta and salads.
There is no need to search for a park in Barrhaven. A quick Google search can be helpful, though, to identify the best sports fields, play structures, splash pads, tennis courts, climbing walls, bike paths, nature trails, and dog parks in the area.
There are too many to list them all here, but here are a few favourite Barrhaven parks:
You can also paddle along the Jock River, which borders Barrhaven to the south and find some stunning nature trails along the banks of the Rideau River to the east—the Chapman Mills Conservation Area is picturesque—or explore the Greenbelt to the north.
And, we can’t forget to mention the recreation facilities. Not much compares to Barrhaven’s Minto Recreation Complex. It’s got one of the best pools in all of Canada, a couple of regulation-sized ice rinks, a fancy artificial turf field and more. Residents can sign up for activities there or at the Walter Baker Sports Centre, which also has a pool, ice rinks and fitness centre.
With many choosing to commute to the city from Barrhaven, rush hour is indeed busy each morning and evening. Despite easy access to Highways 416 and 417, it might take 45-60 minutes to arrive at your downtown destination at peak hours. (Without traffic, it’s closer to 25 minutes.)
While it’s absolutely ideal to have a car to get around the large suburb and travel to downtown Ottawa, if you prefer public transportation, you can reach the city centre by bus or connect to the ever-expanding O-Train. There are several “park and ride” lots, and you’re always close to a nearby bus stop and a Via Rail station on Fallowfield Road. (Note: It’ll take a while! There is a reason some refer to Barrhaven as “Farhaven.” The good news is there are future plans to extend the light rail system into Barrhaven!)
And, if you have family flying in to visit—no problem! It’s just a short 15-minute drive to Ottawa International Airport (YOW) from Barrhaven.
